DIET OF A YOGI: THE BEGINNER

If you have been attaining to the practice of Hatha Yog Asana (postures), Pranayama (control of life force) or Shatkarma (purification techniques) for under three years with devotion, you will or may come to notice the importance of food. How a yogi eats, when he eats and how much he eats is very important in balancing the physical and subtle bodies of the practitioner. As an aspiring yogi, one must place his dietary and eating habits at a level of high importance until it is completely mastered, balanced and no longer regarded or thought about.

Here is the ideal* diet:

--Breads, grains (rice, oats, quinoa, amaranth, millet, cous-cous), beans (lentils, pinto, mung, garbanzo[chickpeas]), fruits, vegetables (65% Raw, 35% Cooked), nuts and seeds, curry and tumeric based foods, sweet foods (not including fruit), dairy product**, pure water

Here is the ideal* percentage breakdown for the above foods and liquids:

--Breads: 10%
--Grains: 10%
--Beans: 10%
--Fruits: 25%
--Vegetables: 25%
--Dairy Product**: 3%
--Pure Water: 15%
--Sweet Foods: 1%
--Nuts & Seeds: 1%

*These recommendations will not be suitable or satisfactory for everyone's palate. However, it is important to stay as close to the above perscribed dietary requirements as possible.

**If you are a vegan, replace dairy products with soy products.

The diet breakdown set forth is strictly for those that wish to attain success in the practice of Yoga.
